The Gargamel Returns: Buju Banton Signs with VP Records for Raw Dancehall Project

Written by on April 8, 2026

(ReggaeVibeMedia.com) – The voice of the streets is back with a vengeance. Buju Banton has officially signaled the start of a new era, signing a major deal with VP Records to release his 14th studio album. After the experimental sounds of Upside Down 2020 and the soulful Born For Greatness, Buju is returning to the very foundation that made him a global icon: Authentic Dancehall.

During a recent private listening session for the upcoming 16-track project, the Grammy winner described the new sound as a “Masterclass” in stagecraft and storytelling, staying true to the era where dancehall was raw and “un-sugarcoated.”

“Dancehall came from a space where it was rudeboys… guys who experienced political warfare and brutality. They painted pictures that we have embraced through the passage of time.”

The Sound: No Sugarcoating

Fans can expect a heavy dose of drums, bass, and horns. This isn’t a project aimed at chasing TikTok trends; it’s a masterclass in the “Reggae Vibe” that defined the 90s. Early reports highlight layered vocal arrangements and a gritty energy that pays homage to the era of Mr. Mention.

Buju’s recent activity confirms he’s already in top gear:

  • “Ungrateful People” – A hard-hitting social commentary reminding us why his lyrics still carry weight.

  • “Company” – A smooth collaboration with Ari Lennox, showing his ability to bridge genres.

  • “African Soldier” – A feature with Patoranking, solidifying his position as a bridge to the Motherland.

The North American Masterclass

The album rollout coincides with Buju Banton’s return to the U.S. stage for what is being hailed as a Masterclass Tour. Fans in the Tri-State area and across North America are gearing up for his return, with massive dates scheduled for:

  • June 19, 2026: Pacific Amphitheatre (with Stephen Marley)

  • July 3, 2026: BMO Pavilion, Milwaukee

  • Major stops in Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Atlanta to follow.

This upcoming album marks a full-circle moment for Buju and VP Records, their first full-length partnership since the 2003 classic Friends For Life.
