The Philly Takeover: Where Track Meets the Rhythm of the Penn Relays 2026

Written by on April 8, 2026

(ReggaeVibeMedia.com) – Every April, the city of Philadelphia transforms into a vibrant extension of the Caribbean. While the Penn Relays is technically the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States, for the West Indian community, it’s better known as the “Philly Carnival.”

The connection between Jamaica and the Penn Relays is a historic one, dating back to 1964 when Kingston College first stepped onto the Franklin Field track. Since then, Jamaican dominance has become the “Gold Standard” of the meet. This year, the energy is even higher as we celebrate the induction of the legendary 1999 Jamaica College 4x800m relay team into the Penn Relays Hall of Fame. Their performance decades ago still echoes, proving that for Jamaican athletes, the Penn Relays is more than just a race—it’s a proving ground that fuels the passion of an entire culture.

Jamaican Athletes to Watch (April 23–25)

The 130th running of the Relays at Franklin Field features an incredible roster of young talent ready to cement their legacy:

  • The Sprint Queens: Look out for the HS Girls 4x100m heats on Thursday morning (starting at 9:45 AM). Edwin Allen, Hydel, and St. Jago are expected to dominate the track as they aim for the Championship of America.

  • The Field Stars: Keep your eyes on Jade Ann Dawkins (St. Jago) as she looks to continue her triple jump dominance, alongside standout high jumper Shanniqua Williams (St. Andrew).

  • The Blue-and-White Charge: Jamaica College (JC) and Kingston College (KC) will be battling it out in the HS Boys 4x800m heats on Friday morning (9:00 AM) and the 4x100m Championship later that afternoon.

The Sound of the City

Philadelphia doesn’t just host the games; it embraces the culture. While the track heat is intense, the best party of the weekend will be hosted by RV Promotions with the legendary Peter Blacks on the line-up. This is where the industry and true connoisseurs unite for pure authentic vibes.

Other highlights include the St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) Saturday Night Reception and the essential Team Jamaica Bickle (TJB) Village at the Palestra, where you can find the best Jamaican food and community vibes all weekend.
