The Jamaican dancehall icon Vybz Kartel’s request to provide fresh evidence in support of his murder appeal was denied by the Privy Council in the United Kingdom.
The convicted murderer had argued that new information from an expert witness about mobile phone evidence should be admitted by the court.
In Jamaica, the phone was inspected in front of the prosecution. The court denied the application after reviewing the submission. Hearing on the substantive appeal is still pending.
For the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams in 2011, Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, and fellow performer Shawn Storm, whose real name is Shawn Campbell, along with Kahira Jones and Andre Saint John, were found guilty in 2014. Williams’ remains were never found.
Shawn Storm’s parole eligibility time was set at 25 years, while Kartel was given a 35-year sentence.
Before being eligible for release, St. John and Jones will have to serve 30 and 25 years in prison, respectively.
