Baba Roots Founder Mr. William “Baba Roots” Webb Sr. Murdered

William W. Webb Sr. better known as “Baba” founder of the world renowned herbal drink company “Baba Roots,” was reported to have been killed on Sunday morning at his home in the Darliston area of Westmoreland, Jamaica.

Reports are that four gunmen broke through Webb’s window at around 3:45 in the morning, according to local police, and after a brief talk, shot him. According to law enforcement officials, his room was also looted by the gunmen.

After being transported to the Savanna-La-Mar Public General Hospital, Webb was declared dead.

I (Ahmad “Ras Mahddy” Tafari) knew Baba personally for many years. I lived on Hopewell Road right around the corner from his shop in the heart of Darliston, Westmoreland Jamaica. I worked with Baba on occasion learning how he ran the business, and bringing his company into new era of web sites, and the latest technologies. We had a very different friendship than most because I wasn’t one of the many around him that needed him for something. I was more of a help to him and helping his business moving forward. I can tell you he always moved cautiously, and he was very protective. I was surprised to hear someone shot him the way he always moved carefully.

Just to show the kinda man “Baba” was I’ll share the story about the time that I was doing in technology training in Washington, D.C. and I had an idea of bringing the same technology training to the community of Darliston, in Westmoreland Jamaica and I needed a space to host the training sessions. Baba was the first on board to support me by donating office space free of charge. I ran into problems actually getting the necessary equipment into the country and lost time and money. After talks with different people close to me “Baba” being one of them, I decided to head back to America and continue works, and haven’t talked to Baba in about 7-8 years the last time I touched down on the island.

Baba was a very proud African man who had a very firm attitude with a cool and warm side that very few ever experienced because he never wanted to be viewed as having any weaknesses. He inspired me to do the best I can, and bring pride to our community so the people can have positive role models to draw inspiration from. He would tell me about the many great stories of his experiences in America, coming up starting Baba Roots, and his life in general. He shared many of the trials and tribulations of creating and maintaining such a successful business coming from Jamaica. His life truly deserves to be highlighted in a documentary. Baba taught me, if I can remember it correctly, BABA is an acronym that stands for Basic Assets for the Betterment of Africans.
