Mutabaruka receives IRIE FM’s Lifetime Achievement Award

[K’Shema Francis – Irie fm] From Minister Louis Farrakhan to professor Mervin Morris, powerful speeches, riveting poetry, and outstanding performances, IRIE FM’s Lifetime Achievement Award honouring Mutabaruka was a tremendous success.

The event dubbed Mutabaruka The Journey, saw people from all walks of life gathered at the Kingston Technical High School to pay their respects to the world-renowned dub poet on Sunday.

A museum curated by Sherifa Balfour and Muta’s wife Jackie Hope showcased artifacts collected over 30 years of traveling. It covered his musical journey, a wall of fame and his life in images which gave patrons insight into his family life.

In his acceptance speech, Mutabaruka expressed gratitude and highlight the significance of being acknowledged by his peers.

In addition to the IRIE FM Lifetime Achievement Award, Mautabaruka received a self-portrait bust created by the artist Paul Napier. He also received a miniature bust of Jamaica’s first national hero Marcus Garvey, also created by Paul Napier.

Muta also copped the football trophy, after the Mutabaruka All Stars demolished IRIE FM invitational with a three, nil win. Marlon Icon Samuels, Michael Tulloch, and Jah Mikes were some of the players on Muta’s squad; while Iba Mahr, Prophecy, and Sativa Di Black One were the celebs who played for IRIE FM.

The awards were presented by IRIE FM’s Managing Director Debian Dewar, and Director of Programmes, Ka’Bu Ma’at Kheru.

The event hosted by Elaine Wint and IRIE FM’s Elise Kelly saw outstanding performances from Big Yute, Kenyatta Hill, Sizzla Kalonji, and Pam Hall.

The poetry segment dedicated to Mutabaruka saw superb performances from Gavin Grant who delivered Mi Know Wah Yuh Up To, Kshema Francis with Dis Poem, and Pat Clarke with I The Slave.

Other performances came from Tony Rebel, Queen Ifrica Earl Chinna Smith, and the Binghistra.

The man of the moment Mutabaruka performed for almost an hour. Muta was his element. He performed classics such as Every time Mi Hear The Sound, White Man Country, and Butter Pan Culture. Sister Carol and Bob Andy also joined Muta on stage during his set.

The curtains closed minutes after 7 with Mutabaruka and the Skool Band.

Marcia Griffiths, Beenie Man, Capleton, Richie Stephens, and Nesbeth were some of the entertainers in attendance.

All-in-all, IRIE FM’s Lifetime Achievement Award honouring Mutabaruka was incident free and well supported.
