Written by on March 11, 2025

(ReggaeVibeMedia.com) – The reggae community is in mourning following the death of legendary singer Calvin George Scott, known to fans worldwide as Cocoa Tea. The 65-year-old artist passed away on March 11, 2025, at a hospital in Broward, Florida, after suffering a cardiac arrest. His wife, Malvia Scott, confirmed that Cocoa Tea had been battling lymphoma since 2019 and had also struggled with pneumonia in recent months.

Born on September 3, 1959, in Rocky Point, Clarendon, Jamaica, Cocoa Tea’s career spanned over four decades, during which he became renowned for his smooth vocals and conscious lyrics. He delivered timeless hits such as “I Lost My Sonia,” “Rocking Dolly,” and “Weh Dem A Go Do,” solidifying his status as a reggae icon. In 2008, he gained international attention with his song “Barack Obama,” showcasing his ability to blend music with social commentary.

Beyond his own musical achievements, Cocoa Tea played a pivotal role in nurturing new talent. Notably, he introduced Koffee, now one of reggae’s brightest stars, during his set at Rebel Salute 2018, marking a significant moment in her burgeoning career. Koffee has often credited Cocoa Tea for giving her one of her earliest major platforms and has expressed deep gratitude for his mentorship.

Tributes have poured in from across the reggae community and beyond. Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Olivia Grange, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “I am very saddened by his passing. He has been a staple in the industry for so long. One of the greatest reggae singers who ever lived.”

Artists such as Shaggy, Buju Banton, and Chronixx have also shared heartfelt messages, celebrating Cocoa Tea’s legacy. Shaggy wrote, “Another great soul gone too soon. Rest well, Cocoa Tea.” Buju Banton reflected on their collaborations, stating, “Your voice, your wisdom, your heart—Jah knows we will miss you, King.” Chronixx honored him, saying, “A true pioneer, a guide, and a legend. Your music lives forever.”

Cocoa Tea’s kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on those who knew him. As fans and fellow musicians reflect on his legacy, his contributions to reggae music and his nurturing spirit toward emerging artists like Koffee will be remembered and cherished.
