Minister Grange disclosed in parliament this week that despite extending the deadline, the panel that usually selects the finalists for the Jamaica Festival Song Competition was unable to determine ten suitable songs from the 123 entries.
The JCDC Festival Song Competition has been experiencing a shortage of entrants in previous years. Minister Grange declared in 2020 that the competition needed to be re-energized which lead to a number of well-known entertainers such entering the competition.
Buju Banton won the JCDC Festival Song Competition in 2020, while Stacious, a dancehall entertainer, won in 2021.
The Jamaica Festival Song has been utilized annually to inspire a mood of enthusiasm about Jamaica and the Jamaican culture for Independence festivities since 1966, making it the island’s longest-running original song contest.
Many have responded to these latest developments concerning the contest cancellation. I think this response from “The Ripe Mango” says it all… She put it so well… Mic drop 🎤
