Jamaica music history

The Jamaican music fraternity and global reggae fans are celebrating the life and enduring legacy of legendary singer-songwriter Glenroy “Ernie” Smith, who passed away on April 16, 2026, at the age of 80. A major tribute event organized by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in Kingston brought together family, fans, and musicians to honor his massive contributions to cultural heritage. Renowned for his distinct baritone voice and timeless hits like “Duppy Gunman” and the internationally acclaimed “Life Is Just For Living,” Smith was a pioneer of early reggae who famously won Jamaica’s first international music award in Japan in 1972. The local memorials highlighted his transition from secular storytelling to gospel reggae, ensuring his place as a permanent pillar of roots and culture.
