Remembering a Reggae Firebrand: The Life and Legacy of Fantan Mojah

Written by on July 15, 2026

(ReggaeVibeMedia.com) – The reggae community is in deep mourning following the passing of Owen Lennox Moncrieffe, the spiritually charged vocalist and Rastafarian firebrand known globally as Fantan Mojah. The 49-year-old artist passed away on Tuesday evening at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, just weeks before his 50th birthday, following a rapid decline in health.

Before he became a household name and a voice for social consciousness, Fantan Mojah’s path to stardom was paved with grit and determination. Born in White Hill, St. Elizabeth, he first entered the music industry as a struggling artist under the name “Mad Killer”—a tribute to his favorite dancehall icon, Bounty Killer. During those early days, he worked as a handyman for the legendary Kilamanjaro sound system, often performing during sound checks to refine his craft.

His big break came in a story that has become the stuff of reggae legend. While working as a window washer, he crossed paths with Downsound Records executive Joe Bogdanovich. The two struck up a conversation that eventually led to a recording session, launching a partnership that would produce some of the most impactful records of the 2000s. Under Bogdanovich’s guidance, Mojah shifted his focus toward conscious, spiritually rooted music, famously adopting the name Fantan Mojah and releasing his acclaimed 2005 debut album, Hail the King.

In recent years, however, the “Stronger” singer faced significant health challenges. In July 2024, he was hospitalized in Martinique after suffering from severe breathing difficulties and tightness in his chest. At the time, reports indicated his heart was functioning at only a fraction of its capacity. Though he showed promising signs of recovery and had successfully returned to the stage, those close to the artist noted that his health began to deteriorate rapidly over the last week.

At the time of his death, Mojah was staying with friends in Portmore, having recently secured a new visa and preparing to head to Europe for a highly anticipated performance at the Reggae Jam Festival in Germany. According to reports from his booking agency, his condition worsened drastically on Tuesday night; he was observed vomiting blood before he was rushed to the hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to complications related to his heart.
