Vybz Kartel Crosses 4 Million Instagram Followers, Becoming First Male Dancehall Artiste to Hit the Milestone

Vybz Kartel has crossed four million Instagram followers, becoming the first male dancehall artiste to reach the mark and only the third living Jamaican act — alongside Shenseea (9.6M) and Spice (4.8M) — to do so. He now leads all male dancehall artistes online, sitting well ahead of Popcaan (3.3M), Sean Paul (2.7M) and Shaggy (2.3M). The milestone adds fuel to the ongoing King of Dancehall debate and caps a remarkable post-freedom run since his 2024 release.

(ReggaeVibeMedia.com) — Vybz Kartel has crossed four million followers on Instagram, making him the first male dancehall artiste in history to reach the milestone and only the third living Jamaican artiste to get there.

The Worl Boss now stands in rare company. Shenseea leads all living Jamaican acts by a wide margin with 9.6 million followers, while Spice follows with 4.8 million. Kartel rounds out a top three that the two dancehall queens had to themselves until this week.

The gap behind him tells its own story. Popcaan, the artiste Kartel once mentored in the Portmore Empire camp, is his closest male challenger at 3.3 million followers. Sean Paul follows with 2.7 million, and Shaggy comes in at 2.3 million — striking figures given that both men hold Grammy wins for Best Reggae Album and Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits. On Instagram, it is Kartel who pulls the bigger crowd.

The milestone arrives in the middle of a renewed debate over the King of Dancehall crown, reignited by recent comments from Shaggy. Kartel's supporters will point to the numbers as further evidence of his reign, while others will argue the title is decided by records, sound clashes and longevity — not social media.

The online pull is even more remarkable given Kartel's recent history. He spent more than a decade behind bars after his 2011 arrest and 2014 murder conviction, releasing music throughout. The Privy Council quashed that conviction in March 2024, and he walked free that July after Jamaica's Court of Appeal decided against a retrial.

Since his release, the appetite for anything Kartel has only grown, and the follower curve reflects it. Bob Marley, decades after his death, remains the most followed Jamaican music figure on Instagram at 10.1 million — the next mountain for the Worl Boss to climb.
